Forward Magazine May 09 Issue Out

Dear Forward Readers, May 2009 was a celebration of life… and death, for that matter. We ran jolly features about new trends conquering the niche social life of Syrians, like Golf, in Julian Weinberg’s “Inside the Hole,” at the same time took a serious look at the many suicide incidents reported in Syria this year - in Suha Moustapha’s “Unemployed, bruised and suicidal,” where economic reasons seem to be behind the increasing suicide rates. Stephen Starr writes about the rising food prices and their impact on the Syrian household, an investigative feature that probes deep into the matter. Our cover is about ordinary Syrians and Lebanese bringing back normalcy between the two nations through personal initiatives, art and culture (by Brooke Anderson). Stephen Starr writes an insightful feature about “Shattering the myth” of so-called insecurity in Damascus, through the eyes of Americans living here, while Layla Moghrabi investigates the changing coffee culture in Syria in her “From Turkish coffee to Latte.” Hamoud Mahmoud interviews “The Sugar King: Najib Assaf,” Rami Hijazi writes about the future of e-commerce in Syria, and Tomader Fateh interviews a US expert on corporate governance in Syria, John Sullivan from CIPE. Top Syrian blogger, Sasa (newsfromsyria.com) tells us about “Painting the real face of Iraq,” while Scott Davis tells us about the Aleppine horses of Syrian artist Zouhair Dabbagh.
